Impressions:

Over the last few decades I’ve had the opportunity to play hundreds of Yamaha U3 pianos. They have become so popular that people ask for them by model. Consumers come into stores saying “We’re interested in looking at a U1 or a U3”. What makes this model so appealing? Historically, when the approach to high quality piano manufacturing was to custom build them one at a time, Yamaha devised a way to build high quality in mass production. This made an affordable piano accessible and subsequently popular. The Yamaha U3 has been known throughout the world for consistency. If you’re a proficient player, you’ll recognize that Yamaha is known for touch even more than tone. From one note to the next, you can feel every graduation of dynamic response to your fingers. This is very satisfying as a performer when you can anticipate that a certain pressure on any key will translate into the desired sound. The touch on the U3 leans towards the firmer side which enables a wide expression range. Tone is clear and conservative. Eclipsing 50 years, the Yamaha U3 upright piano has been subtly improved over the years but the inherent standard of quality remains the same. But don’t take my word for it. Yamaha has built over 6 million pianos! Obviously Yamaha has struck a chord with the world musically. ~ Glen Barkman

History:

In 1887 a watchmaker by the name of Torakusu Yamaha founded Japan’s first reed organ company. By 1899 he traveled to the USA to learn how to build pianos and started making grand and upright pianos under the name Nippon Gakki meaning “Japanese Musical Instrument”. These humble beginnings have developed into a multinational manufacturing operation with sales into the billions annually, a work force of nearly 20,000 and product lines ranging from motors to electronics to musical instruments. Yamaha is revered as one of the largest piano makers in the world, trendsetting in manufacturing and musical technology.
