The Baldwin piano company was named after Dwight Hamilton Baldwin in 1862. The company was established in Cincinnati, Ohio and Baldwin grew to become one of the largest piano retailers in the Mid Western United States. After surviving 2 World Wars and manufacturing more than a million pianos, Baldwin was eventually purchased by Gibson Guitar Corp. in 2001. By 2006-2007, Gibson opened an upright piano factory in Zhongshan, China and also acquired a grand piano factory in Dongbei, China. Presently, the BP upright pianos are built at Baldwin Zhongshan while the BP grand pianos are built by Parsens to Baldwin specifications in Yichang. New in 2020 is the Academy series (BA). These grands are made in Indonesia and represent a more cost-effective line for Baldwin.
